And what better way to start, than to make a series of articles focused on a passion of mine starting way back when with Battlefield 2: Mods.
For those of you who don't know what that is:
Mods, or modifications, make, ahem, modifications to a given game, adding new features, whether they be silly, strategic, or just plain cool.
The Types of Mods:
Visual: Exactly what it says. Some older games may get a revamp with higher quality textures, a third-party engine with better lighting, and sometimes the original "skins" of characters get replaced with new, better looking ones.
Gameplay: The Mod makes an adjustment to the original game's mechanics, like fixing faulty gameplay aspects, or just adding new ones, like a point system, removing the visual interface, replacing it with a new one, or just leaving it blank, making the game more realistic, and so on.
New Game: Basically taking the game's models, props, and sounds, and using it to create an entirely new experience. And with that, I present to you a New Game Mod:
Mod Type:
Visual Gameplay New Game
Difficulty:
Easy Medium Hard Very Hard Hardcore Nintendo Hard
Gameplay Quality:
Horrid Mediocre Good Great Awesomesauce Masterclass
Story Quality: Non-Existant
Research and Development combines challenging puzzles with action gameplay to create an immersive experience that rivals the original Half Life 2---in terms of the challenge, that is.
What It's about:
You're a scientist. You find yourself in a facility. You solve puzzles. That's it.
How it Handles:
It takes it's gameplay mechanics from Half Life 2, which is very good, and it instead puts new spins on the puzzles and environments which you faced in the original game.
The puzzles are refreshingly challenging. And I don't mean they will take you a while, I mean, they will make you sweat with perplexion, and then beam with satisfaction when you finally solve them.
I don't want to spoil the experience for you, but let's just say that they are unique and interesting.
Physics puzzles with a legless Headcrab Zombie? Check.
Laser redirection through multiple crystals? Check.
Building a vehicle from scratch with parts found in a junkyard? Check.
Delightful action sequences to top it all off? Check.
And there's much more. It's been a while since I played this game, so there may be even more puzzles that challenge you in unique ways.
Seriously, if you have Half Life 2 Episode 2 installed, there's no excuse. Download this mod, and play it! You will not be disappointed.
And, as far as I can recall, you only ever use a gravity gun! (Maybe. As I said, it's been a while.)
So that's all for today. I hope you enjoyed this new column. Nobody says I can't do other games, like Indie, Free, or Flash games, so please tune in next time to see what I've cooked up. :)
See ya later!
